Recycling Locally – Caring Nationally
While waste oil collection is commonplace in many New Zealand workshops, not all businesses recycle their waste oil following best available practice.
Responsible recycling of plastic oil containers and oil filters remains to be a problem for most automotive repairer businesses.
As an environmentally conscious business, Auto Super Shoppes has created a programme that provides for the most environmentally responsible methods available in New Zealand for the recycling of oil and oil related waste materials.
What happens with the waste oil from your car after it is collected from Auto Super Shoppes?
The Auto Super Shoppes Enviro Programme sees used oil filters and plastics repurposed into new products therefore not only reducing waste but also lowering the consumption of raw materials that otherwise would have been used for manufacturing these new goods.
Plastic oil containers are shredded, and the waste oil extracted. They are then cleaned and put into bins ready for processing into plastic fence post that are used in the agricultural industry. This process ensures the plastic is sustainably and locally recycled and not shipped offshore.
Unlike some other programs, the Auto Super Shoppes Enviro Program DOES NOT see oil filters crushed whole into bricks and sent overseas by scrap metal merchants. Our Enviro Program sees our customer's old oil filters drained and shredded, and the waste oil recycled. The washed product is separated into metallic and non-metallic components and the metal product is then used in local manufacturing, for products such as reinforcing used in the building and construction industry.
Our program's treatment of waste oil is also industry leading and the best available in New Zealand. Waste oil brought in from the Auto Super Shoppes Enviro Program initially goes into storage where any free water is drained off. The fuel is then pumped into the process tank and a sample is tested to check the contaminant level. It is then sent for processing in a gas-fired plant which heats the oil slowly to 135 degrees where water and light factions evaporate, and contaminants are removed.
After the oil is processed it is shipped to approved and consented customers, such as the Kinleith and Kawerau paper mills, where this fuel oil is used in their clean-burn kilns, under fully consented processes.
It is a fully certified system and has Work Safe and environmental certification.
How do you support the Auto Super Shoppes Enviro Program?
By simply taking your car for its next oil change and service at a participating Auto Super Shoppe you are doing you part.
You will be charged a small but reasonable Enviro fee that contributes to the costs associated with such an industry leading program, however you can have the peace of mind that the waste resultant from your vehicle service is being managed in the best way available.
